Journal that Isaac Howe kept onboard of the Constellation, from Oct. 27, 1840, the date the frigate was put in commission, to May 12, 1844, when the crew were discharged and paid off. The entries describe life onboard -- assignments, punishments, deaths, illnesses, etc.; report sightings of American and foreign ships; depict the ports, and relate political and international news. The entries include lists of officers and the crew, miles logged, the frigate's riggings, etc.

Constellation, a frigate launched in 1797, famous for its part in the naval operations of the Quasi-War with France and the Tripolitan War. In the 1840-1844, the Constellation circumnavigated the globe as flagship of Lawrence Kearny and the East India Squadron, with the mission to safeguard American interests in China during the Opium War.
